Bottle shot best practices

Step by step written instructions below.

The image you choose for your bottle shot is very important. It is the first thing people notice about your wine. So, having an image that shows the bottle and label clearly is key to a great GWDB wine profile.

The link below provides a winery example from our Napa Valley Region Guide which shows a few different ways that bottle shots are uploaded.

The winery in the link above has a few crisp, clean images that have been tightly cropped. These look great, they’re easy to read and they stand out! There is also a wine that appears significantly smaller and blurry due to the white space not being cropped tightly around the bottle. Following these you can see other bottle images that have been taken with various backgrounds behind them. The bottles here are still lovely, but the background takes away from the beauty of the bottle and makes it harder to see.

How else do I make my bottle shot stand out?

There are a few more key components to having the best bottle shot for your wine. One of these is the file type that you use for your image. It is important to use a JPEG or PNG file of up to 10 megabytes when uploading the image. PDF images are not compatible with GWDB as a bottle shot image.

When choosing the bottle shot image to use for each wine/vintage profile, make sure to use the bottle shot for that same vintage year OR a non-vintage bottle shot. As mentioned above, the higher resolution the image, the better. You can utilize our crop feature to improve your bottle images too. Once your image has been uploaded, hover your mouse over the image until a pencil icon appears. If you click this, a drop down menu will appear with the option to crop your image, as seen below.

When cropping the image, try to crop out all white space, eliminate shadows, and crop as tightly to the bottle as possible. Removing your bottle from the image background can help isolate it and make sure all the focus is on your bottle image. Here's a quick video on the fastest way to remove your bottle from it's image background.
